[Commonplace book], [early 19th century].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection, by various members of the Parsons family of Bath, of several hundred entries, including short essays; personal anecdotes; poems; extracts from various authors; and charts and lists. The collection includes religious essays on worship; Adam; and religious systems; as well as a poem titled Christian Fortitude. Other entries address philosophical or scientific subjects, such as essays on friendships; justice; matter and motion; conversion of animal substance; the plurality of worlds; and the human form. The volume also includes anecdotes of personalities associated with Bath, including Ralph Allen and William Warbuton, Bishop of Gloucester, as well as several charts, including a chart of the tax on windows, the House Tax, and the number of carriages in Great Britain, as well as the copy of a letter dated December 17, 1799 on the state of slavery in St. Domingo. More personal entries include a copy of an entry in the Bible of "my son Thomas" which contains a genealogy of the Parsons family; a biography of Mary Parsons, the author's mother; and a list of books lent out by the writer.
